Sensex, Nifty extend loss; Pharma stocks lead

Nifty has further lost ground and is trading near the day's low in the afternoon trade, ahead of the ECB policy decision due later in the day. All sectoral indices are trading in the red barring Pharma that gained over 1%.

On the economy front, WPI inflation for the month of May increased to 14-month high of 4.43% from 3.18% in previous month.

At 1:01 PM, BSE Sensex was at 35,533, down 206 points, while NSE Nifty was at 10,788, down 69 points.

The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading down 0.41% at 16,011, while BSE Small-cap Index is trading down 0.16% at 17,001.

Sun Pharma (+2.20%), HCL Technologies (+1.29%), Lupin (+1.14%), Grasim (+1.04%) and Cipla (+0.97%) were the top gainers on NSE.

Tech Mahindra (-3.12%), Adani Ports (-2.09%), GAIL (-2.00%), State Bank of India (-1.93%) and IOC (-1.91%) were the top losers on NSE.

Some buying activity is seen in healthcare, while IT, banking, oil and gas, capital goods and consumer durables are showing weakness on BSE.

The India VIX is down 2.69% at 12.2950.

Out of 2,055 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,040 declined, 619 advanced and 396 remained unchanged today.

A total of 12 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trade today, while 43 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.
