Sensex up over 100 points; Pharma, IT index lead
After opening higher today, domestic benchmark indices erased gains as investors booked profit. Indices opened up mirroring the positive sentiment in global markets.
Sentiment globally was lifted as US President Donald Trump exempted certain countries from the import tax and on news that he agreed to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The stock market was also dragged by losses in shares of public sector banks and real estate companies, which fell 1.5% and 0.7%, respectively.
At 10:38 AM, the BSE Sensex was trading at 33,499, up 148 points, while the Nifty50 index was trading at 10,287, up 45 points.
Shares of Bharti Airtel rose 1% after the company received the National Company Law Tribunal's approval for merger with Telenor India Communications Pvt Ltd with certain conditions.
Videocon Industries Limited (VIL), which also has interests in oil and gas through group entities, is planning to sell its stake in Brazilian oil blocks to raise Rs30,000cr, as per a media report. Stock soared 5% on the BSE.
UltraTech Cement increases its bid for Binani Cement by Rs700cr to Rs6,900cr. Shares of Binani gained 5%.
The BSE MidCap Index gained 0.60% and the BSE SmallCap Index gained 0.68%.
Volatility index India VIX slipped 1.73% at 14.3325.
Aurobindo (+2.2%), Hero MotoCorp (+1.8%), Zee (+1.5%), Dr Reddy’s (+1.4%) and Bharti Airtel (+1.4%) were the top gainers on Nifty50.
NTPC (-1.2%), SBI (-1%), Yes Bank (-0.81%), BPCL (-0.70%) and Ambuja Cement (-0.49%) were the top losers in today’s trade.
A total of nine stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trade today, while 60 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.
