Sensex falls over 500 points; RIL, Maruti stock down 3%
Benchmark indices crashed, with the Sensex falling around 500 points and
Nifty Midcap index losing 3% post Budget 2018. All sectoral indices
barring IT and pharma were under pressure. Nifty Realty declined 3.3%
followed by Financial Services, PSU Bank, Auto and Metal that traded
lower around 2%.
At 1:09 PM, the BSE Sensex was trading at 35,387, down 519 points, while the Nifty50 index was trading at 10,863, down 154 points.
The losses were broad-based as the BSE MidCap Index fell 2.22% and the BSE SmallCap Index slumped 2.92%.
Shares of PC Jeweller came off their lows after Chief Financial Officer Sanjeev Bhatia said the company does not have any business agreement with Vakrangee Ltd.
Shares of information technology stocks fared the best today tracking weakness in the rupee. The Nifty IT Index rose 0.2% today, the only gainer among all NSE sectoral indices.
Real estate Index were trading lower, dragged down by weakness in DLF and Indiabulls Real Estate.
Shares of Cummins India fell over 8% to hit their 52-week low after the company in Oct-Dec posted a 13.1% on-year fall in net profit to Rs1.72 bn, below analysts' estimate of Rs1.97 bn.
Volatility index India VIX gained 3.31% at 14.4750.
Aurobindo (+0.99%), Tech Mahindra (+0.97%), TCS (+0.90%), HCL Tech (+0.88%) and Sun Pharma (+0.66%) were the top gainers on Nifty50.
Bajaj Finance (-3.4%), HDFC (-3%), Maruti (-2.8%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (-2.6%) and UltraTech Cement (-2.4%) were the top losers in today’s trade.
Out of 2,019 stocks traded on the NSE, 154 advanced, 1,561 declined and 304 remained unchanged today.
A total of 11 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trade today, while 79 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.
